GROWING GARLIC IN CONTAINERS ON A SMALL PATIO

Follow
Food from the Balcony

The garlic sown was Printanor, a cultivar that is regularly sown in New Zealand from June to August. It is a flavoursome variety suited to winter planting.
When sowing a garlic clove, ensure that the pointed end is facing upward.

Garlic is ready to harvest when the bottom leaves are brown. The upper leaves will still be green. Once harvested, let the garlic bulbs cure for at least two weeks, but it can take up to four weeks sometimes. Curing means allowing the bulbs to properly dry out away from sun and in a well ventilated environment (to prevent molds). They can be cured by hanging together or laying flat. When the tops and roots have all dried, snip them off. The garlic bulbs are ready to be stored in the pantry.
