The 2024 GWM Cannon Alpha Hybrid is here to shake up Australia's dualcab ute segment, which hasn't seen a hybrid model until now. That's right; the Chinese newcomer has beaten next year's Ford Ranger PHEV to the proverbial punch when it comes to petrolelectric powertrains.
While the Cannon Alpha is also available with a 135kW/480Nm 2.4litre turbodiesel fourcylinder engine, the main focus here is the pioneering Hybrid, with its 'selfcharging' seriesparallel setup consisting of a 2.0litre turbopetrol fourcylinder unit and an electric motor that combine for 255kW/648Nm.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Byron Mathioudakis gets behind the wheel of the Cannon Alpha Hybrid to find out just how well it measures up against the bestselling Ranger. After all, it can't afford to get much wrong if it's to come close to the same levels of popularity.
