H1B Layoffs / L1 Visa Lay Off | Understanding grace periods and status changes

Follow
Maneesha Mukhi

If you’ve recently been laid off (on an L1 or H1b visa) and are looking for information around the H1b grace period or L1 visa grace period, this video is for you. We outline immigration options after a layoff and explain the difference between being out of status and accruing unlawful presence. We also cover the risks and benefits of switching from H1b to B2 status after a layoff.

H1B/OPT Alternatives:

If you are worried about a future layoff, not getting selected in the H1B lottery or frustrated with the long green card wait, a newer option (that wasn't widely used at the time this video was filmed) is to work remotely for your U.S. employer in Canada.

I recommend looking at Syndesus. They sponsor your Canadian work visa, help you relocate to Canada, then legally employ you in Canada once you arrive so you can work remotely for your current US employer.
