Hangar 9 Beaver with Electric Start EME 35 - Maiden Flight

Follow
TripleThreatRC

This is the maiden flight of Paul’s Hangar 9 30cc DHC2 Beaver. Although the plane was brought out to get in the maiden on this beautiful New Year's Day, there is still a bit of work needed to finish off the last of the assembly and maybe even have a little fun with some scale detailing. A full navigation light set has been installed but the yoke, hood scoops and dummy engine all need to be installed. Paul will add antennas and some additional panels inside the model to hide any stray wiring. (And, he has already purchased the optional floats for some lake action next summer)

The engine is an EME 35 with the electric start option powered by a 7.4 volt lipo. The lipo also powers the light kit and ignition system through an electronic kill switch. The prop is/was a Falcon 20x8 2 blade. Paul also has a Morepower Adjustable Pitch 3 blade prop for when he really feels the need to go scale.

Here’s a link to the engine:

The receiver is a Futaba 7008 sbus 2 with an expansion hub. Servos are all Futaba digitalis with the exception of the throttle/choke servos which are jr MC35.

For power, there is a pair of LiFe 2s2p 1700mah batteries running 6.6v thru a dual redundant switch. Paul thinks he could probably fly all weekend on that setup LOL.

The pilot is a Civilian Pilot from Warbirdpilots.com . Paul named him "Beaver Bob" after a local Coastal Air pilot who actually goes by that call sign.

Lights are high power 3.3v Cree LED's on heat sinks individually wired to a Hobby King lighting controller. Paul plans to upgrade the controller to a programmable unit so that he can create his own light patterns for flight/landing/takeoff, etc.

There are two LED's on each wingtip 1 strobe and 1 color, 2 landing lights on the wings, one strobe on the rear and one red beacon on the top.

I feel badly that I let Paul down on the video. I had loaned out my camera over the holidays and neglected to check the settings when I got it back. They had been changed. I ended up filming the maiden in 1920x1080 60i however my antique editing software can only handle 1920x1080 30p. The result was a lot of wavy lines and noise in the video. I was able to get a little better result by downgrading the output to 720p and that is what you see here. It’s not great but at least the maiden has its video.

As if that wasn’t bad enough, I forgot to power up the microphone for the takeoff and the first part of the flight. No sound….awesome! And then there is the shaky camera work. I haven’t held a camera in anger since September and I was rusty as heck! Oh well, it was a great way to start off the New Year and hopefully it can only get better from here!

A big shout out to Dale T who used his DSLR to capture the first three still flight photos you see in the video. Thanks for sharing Dale, great shots!

Paul had a bit of bad luck and lost an axle/wheel collar which sent a wheel running on the first landing. Flying in the face of danger, Paul jury rigged a fastener for the wheel in hopes of getting a second flight in. You can see that the "fix" did not hold and the wheel came off while attempting to take off. Fortunately, the only damage was to the wooden prop.

Thanks for watching!
