Do you think that in 50 years time, people will speak about Taylor Swift the way they do with The Beatles now? Will Ed Sheeran be considered as influential as Bob Dylan? Will Billie Eilish be mentioned in the same sentence as Patti Smith, or will Beyonce be considered as prolific as Nina Simone?

It's weird to think that even though there are so many modern music artists that are extremely successful and wellknown, most people would agree that their impact on music isn't anywhere near as meaningful as those who came before them. Does this mean that they're making bad music? No, of course not there are tens of millions of people around the world who love what they do, and quality really has nothing to do with it but why is it that they can't really be considered music legends? Why is it that everything from the music we listen to, to the movies and TV shows we watch all feel as though they're universally loved one moment, then forgotten about in an instant?

Well, it's a little complicated, but it's not entirely the fault of the audience. If you're looking for something to blame, then we need to look at streaming services like Spotify, and the worst offender TikTok, which for musicians, has become the most outrageously exploitative platform in human existence.

Your attention span isn't getting shorter, tech companies just don't want you to care about one thing for very long.
