Having a Frenectomy? Do It Right?

If you or your child are having a frenectomy (the minor surgical procedure to release a tonguetie), then you also need to do myofunctional therapy exercises.

It’s so important to do myofunctional therapy exercises for at least two to three weeks before the tonguetie procedure. These exercises help to prepare and strengthen the muscles of the tongue.

After the frenectomy, wound care is vital. The mouth and tongue heal really well, which means that it's possible that the tongue will reattach and heal back down the way it was. So I meet with my patients on the day of the surgery to help with wound care and to prescribe some gentle exercises.

Once the tie has been released, it’s time to train the tongue to move the way it should. Just because the tongue is now capable of a normal range of motion doesn’t mean it can move that way. So this is when we start the full myofunctional therapy program, which is basically physical therapy for the oral and facial muscles.

Done right, a tonguetie release should be easy and the results should be permanent. But if you only do some basic exercises or none at all, you may not be satisfied with the results...
