Hay Preservative Applicator Set Up

Humble Haymakers

This is our hay preservative applicator setup on our John Deere 348 baler. The preservative is used to prevent dust and mold when baling higher humidity hay 18 percent up to 25 or some claim even 30 percent humidity. I had a few folks ask me about our setup, what it is and how it works so I made a quick impromptu video. In the video, I refer to tons per acre, but I meant to say lbs per ton which is how this hay preservative is measured/applied. We are using New Holland Cropsaver (by Harvestec) (JD, AGCO, CASEIH preservatives are the same thing, just different name and label on the container). The applicator is called Cropcare. I'm pretty sure it's by Paul B Zimmerman online store. The preservative is buffered propionic acid, which will not rust the baler (ph is similar to water), but has a vinegar smell. Bottom line the stuff works. Good to use with higher humidity hay, narrow haying windows, fall cuttings where hay is hard to dry out due to cooler temps and heavy dews. It also makes possible haying earlier and later in the day. We sell hay to horse folks, some like it, some don't. YMMV all I know is I can explain buffered propionic acid (and it's vinegar smell), but I can't explain away dust and moldy hay. IMHO better to use this hay preservative than to loose an entire cutting of hay....
