Hayduke Trail Thru Hike 8.5lb Ultralight Gear List

Follow
JupiterHikes

The Hayduke Trail is an 800 mile desert hike across the state of Utah, dipping into Arizona briefly. Passing through very remote areas, involving a lot of route finding in and around canyons. There will be long water carries upwards of 30 miles, as well as long distances between resupply. Temperatures can be above 110* during the day and below freezing at night. We will be starting our hike around April 15th.

All together my baseweight is 8.5lbs (3.8kgs), but that is including 1.8lbs (0.8kg) of camera gear. So this is much closer to a 7lb kit, with a massive camera! Check out my website for specific weights of items and to see the full list! http://www.jupiterhikes.com/gear/

This is a trail that I have long dreamed of doing for it’s beauty, remoteness, and challenge. I hope my past desert hiking experiences have prepared me for what many say is the hardest thru hike in the United States. Having now done the Pacific Crest Trail, Arizona Trail, and Grand Enchantment Trail which are all in desert environments I think that those have been a good primer for something like this! I haven't yet done the Continental Divide Trail, but that would also be a really great thru hike to prepare for this one as they both involve route finding, long water carries, remoteness, and a whole lot of brutality.

The Hayduke Trail passes through Arches National Park, Canyonlands National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Capitol Reef National Park, Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, Bryce Canyon National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, and Zion National Park. As well as some of the most scenic trails and areas in not just Utah, but Arizona, and the entire United States.

I think the Hayduke Trail is one of the most interesting thru hikes in the entire world, as well as being one of the hardest thru hikes. It will be a true adventure, and we are both super excited for it!!

It is worth mentioning that I am hiking this trail with my partner, we are not sharing much gear on this trail as I think given the difficulty it will be good to be self sufficient. She is carrying a PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) as well as a repair kit, which I am not carrying. While I am carrying our two person shelter.
