High density lipoproteins (HDL) transport cholesterol from peripheral tissues to the liver.
The major apoprotein in HDL is ApoAI.
HDL act as a repository of transferrable apoproteins.
The major function of HDL is to collect the excess cholesterol from tissues and to transport it back to the liver where it is excreted in bile.
This process is known as reverse cholesterol transport
