So we’re wrapping up the eighth generation of consoles and I would amiss if I didn’t talk about Hellblade, Senua’s Sacrifice before I leap into the age of the PS5 and Xbox Series X. I haven’t taken the time, yet, to assess what my games of this generation are, but Hellblade is right up there in the list. Whenever I’m thinking about games that I love or would recommend to friends, I always come back to it. Maybe it’s because the game’s just that good, or maybe it’s because I’m Scottish so love to see me some representation in games. Not only did Ninja Theory craft an absorbing story here, but they also ventured beyond the scope of what we would commonly understand as an “indie” game.

Instead, here we’re going to take a slightly different approach. Not only will I examine Hellblade as a game in its own right, but also with the backdrop of norse mythology. I’ll be sprinkling in some of my favourite myths and tales in relation to Senua’s story, as well as exploring the narrative design and game mechanics that carry us through this 10 hour experience, and making the case for Hellblade to be one of the most important games of this generation.
