During World War I, York was drafted into the U.S. Army and assigned to the 82nd Division. In 1918, he singlehandedly captured 132 German soldiers and helped to destroy 35 machine guns, despite being heavily outnumbered. His courageous actions earned him the Medal of Honor, and he became a national hero. He passed away in 1964, leaving a lasting legacy as one of the most celebrated American heroes of World War I.
