Who hasn’t forgotten to take a pill when you were supposed to?
While we have all benefited from the incredible technological advances of modern medicine, pill taking hasn’t changed much in the past century. What good is the development of a wonder drug if you don’t remember to take it?
Sure, you could set a reminder on your smartphone to take your meds, but if you don’t, that phone isn’t smart enough to call a caregiver to make sure you take them.
The meds that some of us take can make the difference between life and death. And taking some drugs, or missing a dose, could affect the judgment you need to comply with your doctor’s prescribing orders.
How bad is this problem of not taking prescribed meds, called medication adherence?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC, estimates that nonadherence causes 125,000 American deaths per year.
If you’re willing to spend a little more to make sure a loved one takes the medicine she needs, Hero can help her take the right dose, at the right time and frequency, and in the right way.
Kal Vepuri came up with the idea for Hero when his Mom missed a dose of a critical medication. Even though she was a medical practitioner, she was struggling to juggle dozens of pills during a health crisis.
Since its 2018 introduction, this smart medical management machine has dispensed more than five million pills.
Not only can it tell a senior when to take a pill, because Hero is part of the Internetofthings, it can also remind them via phone in case they forget. It can also inform a faraway caregiver if the user forgets. Hero can even order prescription refills through its app!
Hero can hold a month’s supply of up to ten different medications. Its average user takes seven different pills daily, and ten pills total.
Not only can it dispense pills like a vending machine, but it can also alert you that it’s time to take other meds that it can’t store, such as liquids or injections.
