A raised temperature is commonly the first sign of Strangles and typically occurs 23 days before a horse starts shedding this nasty bacteria. That’s why it’s so important to have a thermometer, know our horse’s normal healthy temperature and regularly check for fever – especially if we go to events or bring new horses onto yards.

High Moor Livery lost 4 ponies and there were devastating complications for others in an outbreak that took 7 months to resolve and yet, working alongside their vet, they managed to contain the disease to 27 of the 64 horses.
