High Potassium: Who’s at Risk?

Follow
The Balancing Act

Many people have only heard of potassium as a good thing. However, with people with compromised kidneys, what would seem like a normal level of potassium intake can wreak havoc on their body. Their kidneys aren’t able to filter the potassium out. Symptoms of high potassium (HP) can range from mild or vague to barely noticeable—if noticeable at all. It’s often disregarded as a secondary condition, as there are often more “pressing” health issues for patients who do have HP.

However, unmanaged high potassium as noted can be a huge risk and can lead to serious issues, including heart attack. Patients, especially those with chronic kidney disease, diabetes, or heart failure, should work with their HCP to track and proactively manage potassium levels to avoid major health events. We hear from both a patient and doctor about their experiences with HP.
