Brushless direct current motors are synchronous motors powered by direct current electricity through an inverter or switching power supply that generates electricity in the form of alternating current to drive each phase of the motor through a closedloop controller. The controller provides pulses of current to the motor windings, which control the speed and torque of the motor. This control system replaces the commutator used in many conventional electric motors.
The advantages of a brushless motor over brushed motors are high powertoweight ratio, high speed, almost instantaneous speed and torque control, high efficiency and low maintenance. Brushless motors are used in places such as computer peripherals (disk drives, printers), handheld power tools, and vehicles ranging from model airplanes to automobiles. In modern washing machines, brushless DC motors have led to the replacement of rubber belts and gearboxes with a directdrive design.
Magnetic or magnetic field is the area in which a magnet can display its magnetic properties. The lines formed around the magnet are called magnetic field lines created by the magnet in that region. The direction of magnetic field lines is from north (N) to south (S). The magnetic field is produced internally by moving electric charges, timevarying electric fields, or by elementary particles. Magnetic field is a vector quantity. That is, it is defined by its direction and intensity at any point. The magnetic field is represented by the letter B. The SI unit is Tesla, the surname of Serbian scientist Nikola Tesla. Since the magnetic field is measured using the Lorentz force, its unit is Newton per second. Since one coulomb per second is called one ampere, it is also referred to as T=N(Am)1. In practice, gauss (G) is used because the tesla is a very large unit for daily events.
