Visiting Durango, taking the DurangoSilverton Railway, and hiking into the Chicago Basin have all been on my bucketlist since I moved to Colorado. And Heidy and I finally knocked out all three in one trip! We took the train from Durango to a stop 1/2 way between Durango and Silverton where it just drops you off in the middle of the wilderness and leaves. Only one train per day to drop off and pick up backpackers. We unfortunately could only do one night, but it was well worth it (Despite what Heidy thought during the hike in).
