Hiking at Koli Finland - Awesome Landscape and a Cave

Ali Leiniö

This is a hiking story from a threeday hiking trip in Koli National Park, Finland in early summer 2018.

The journey begins at Koli hills, from where we continue towards Ryläys camp site and shelter. I make some tea on a wood burning stove. We spend the first night there in a hammock. In the morning I talk a little about the history of Koli, and why it is called the national scenic view in Finland. Then we continue to an observation tower to look at the view. After that we come to Kiviniemi, which is a bed & breakfast type of service along the Herajärvi trail which we are on. There is also a leanto shelter, where we cook food on an open fire. A cat comes to say hello. From Kiviniemi we continue to the other shore of lake Herajärvi. There is a rope ferry that is used to go across. Then we come to Lakkala, an old farm that is along the trail and a part of it. The sun is already going down, but we continue to YläMurhi to spend the second night there. It is an old farm too, and it has a camping ground next to it. The next morning we head to Pirunkirkko, a famous cave in the rock. I go inside and I am amazed how large the cave is. I cannot find an old scripture that was made in the 17th century on the cave wall. Then we continue back to Koli hills where we started. The views from the hill are mindblowing, and I spend quite some time there. I talk about Koli a little, and about a future trip to Patvinsuo National Park that is near. Our hike ends here.
