Carantan, a place we have been to once before, but never really stopped to have a look round. We really didn't know much about the town, other than its fairly small and has quite a large marina. Any trip to a town isn't complete without a mini marina tour.

It turns out, there is more to Carantan than meets the eye. Although if you walk around now, you will see very little of the past other than the odd clue from road names, the streets and squares have many stories to tell. First of all, the car park was free woohoo! We took a short walk into the main square, which has been there for hundreds of years. This square has a statue dedicated to the fallen civilians of World War I. Many people lost their lives here during a medal ceremony in the 1920's. Nowadays, the square is home to a car park with its reminiscence of medieval history popping up now and then. Whilst we were walking around, we noticed lots of green footprints on the ground. This was a circuit walk around the town showing you notable historic places on the way. We followed for a bit before the footprints disappeared down a now no entry road.

From town, we headed slightly north into the national park. This part of the park has a lake walk with bird hides, you'll have to check out Matts photography website as there were some stunning pictures we were able to capture. This place was €5 each to enter, free parking and a little museum inside Unfortunately for us, only 2 days later it was free entry! This was a wonderful walk with a pretty little walled garden and an abundance of apple trees. Calma set in very quickly as I tried to pick an apple and it had a wasp in it resulting in me being stung for the first time in my life! but...I live to tell the tale.
