Homan’s Sign (for Deep Vein Thrombosis)

Homan’s sign is used to evaluate for deep vein thrombosis. With the patient supine, the knee is in full extension. The examiner passively dorsiflexes the ankle and then squeezes the calf. A positive test is pain or tenderness in the calf.
