Horton Plains National Park

Horton Plains National Park is situated in the Central Province of Sri Lanka in Nuwara Eliya District. It is situated at the eastern boundaries of the Upper Montane Forest Range of Central Highland of Sri Lanka. Upper Montane is 15002524 m above sea level.
The plateau of Horton Plains which is at a nominal elevation of 2100 meters also bears the 2nd, 3rd & 4th highest peaks of Sri Lanka, namely Kirigalpoththa (2389 m) and Thotupolakanda (2357 m) & Aagrabopath (2320 m). The area of the Horton Plains is 3160 ha and is about 8% of the total upper montane forests and grasslands of Sri Lanka.

The rainwater of Horton Plains plateau is drained through tributaries to Mahaveli river to the North (through Uma Oya), Walawe River to the South (through Belihul Oya and Kiriketi Oya) and Kelani river to the West (through Bogawantalawa Oya).
Horton Plains has an average rainfall figure of around 5000mm though the surrounding areas have an average of 2540mm. Horton Plains gets more rain from North West monsoon and throughout the year even the minimum rain fall per month for the area had been 100mm. The mean annual temperature for the area is about 13C.

Nonperial Trail

This is the shortest pathway to world's end through the forest, but entry was prohibited to the public. It’s a 2 km difficult trail. Those who are granted permission from Department of Wildlife and Forestry allowed to walk through this forest. However, The path to World's end from Nagrak Bungalow is a private property. Only who booked Nagrak Bungalow also want to get permission to get in. Moreover, this is considered one such wonderful place where you could get completely isolated and feel heavenly. Our venturing through forest where wilderness remain completely free from human influence truly adventurous. Nonpareil trail to the World’s End begins behind the bungalow. But there’s a signage said that “entry without a permission is prohibited”.

Baker's Falls

Baker's Falls is 20m high and is situated on the Belihul Oya within the Horton Plains National Park. Baker’s Falls plunges over a wide rock into a gorge filled with rhododendrons. This waterfall is named after Sir Samuel Baker, who resided on the island from 1847 to 1855. Baker was one of the first persons to popularize the emerging resort of Nuwara Eliya, which is close by. He did so partly by importing from England the livestock to establish an Englishstyle farm in the hill country of the new and underdeveloped colony. Baker was exploring the best hunting grounds on the island the Horton Plains. The waterfall he used to stop frequently during hunting was named with his name. There is a 3km footpath to Baker’s Falls within the Horton Plains National Park starting from the Far Inn Information Centre.
