Here is my experience switching to hot wire cutting for rc wings.. etc.

**For Shorter or Non NiChrome wire use lower voltage. (than my 36v example)

I've just recently tried a small guitar string and it works well with 12v lead acid or 3 cell Lipo battery. I also found that you can put said battery on a charger while you're using it so it never goes dead.

A trick to test what characteristics (resistance/current pull) your wire has, use a lower voltage source, and slide the contacts on your wire from a large distance to a short distance until it makes that section of wire hot, then add voltage to increase the distance of wire that can be made that hot as desired.
