How Air Brake Systems Works in Locomotives

The air brake system in a locomotive comprises several components, including the air compressor, air reservoirs, brake valves, brake cylinders, and brake shoes. The air compressor compresses atmospheric air into the reservoirs, which store the compressed air until it's needed for braking. The brake valves control the flow of air between the reservoirs and the brake cylinders, where the air pressure is converted into mechanical force that applies the brakes. The brake shoes, which are located on the wheels, press against the wheels to slow down or stop the train.
