Working with hours in Excel, perhaps, it is one of the most common daily tasks we have to do, but many times when working with hours it can be a little complicated to solve simple situations such as when the result of a calculation of hours returns a negative value or even when sum of multiple hours returns a result greater than 24 hours.

So in this free Excel tutorial to solve some problems related to calculating with hours in the Excel spreadsheet, I brought you two practical examples that can help you a lot in your day to day and in real situations.

In the first example, we need to calculate the total operating hours of a machine to find out how many hours the machine has worked on each day of the week.

In the other example, we have a timesheet for a company employee where we basically have two entries and two working hours departures being a lunch break.

Whenever we obtain a negative result of subtracting hours in Excel, we can reverse the order of the values used within the formula. However, so that we can do this automatically instead of using the formula line by line manually, we can use the IF function in Excel.

The if function in Excel helps us to automate tasks and processes because the function IF manages to verify previously defined conditions and criteria.

IF a criteria is met, the function if it performs a specified action but if the criteria is not met, the IF function performs another action.

This way, the IF function is an excellent function and we can automate the process of the math of the total hours worked.
