In 1950, China invaded Tibet under the pretext of "liberating" it from a theocratic feudal system. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) crossed the Jinsha River and quickly surrounded Tibetan forces, capturing the town of Chamdo. Following military pressure, Tibetan representatives were coerced into signing the Seventeen Point Agreement in 1951, which affirmed China's sovereignty over Tibet while promising internal autonomy. Despite initial promises, China's control over Tibet intensified, leading to significant political and cultural changes. This invasion marked the beginning of China's direct rule and the eventual flight of the Dalai Lama into exile in 1959.
