How Chiropractic Adjustments Really Work [Evidence based explanation]

Follow
Jeffrey S. OGuin DC

There is a common misconception that chiropractors put bones back into place. However, there is no evidence to support this overlystated claim.

It is more likely that spinal manipulation (chiropractic adjustments) resets internal structures within facet joints. These are called synovial folds or meniscoid entrapments. Other explanations are that chiropractic adjustments break up adhesions in the surrounding soft tissues. In both explanations, you'll notice that the intent is to improve joint mobility to improve the function and posture of the spine.

Additionally, spinal manipulations may increase the circulation and blood flow to deep structures within the spine.

Finally, there are nervous system reflexes involved with chiropractic adjustments. These act as a reset in the spinal cord, relaxing tight muscles and relieving pain.

In this video, Dr. Jeffrey O'Guin, a St. Louis chiropractor, explains the evidencebased and sciencebacked understanding of how a chiropractic adjustment really works.
