How Did a Bunch of Backmarkers SAVE MotoGP?

Follow
Superbike John

This is the story of how a bunch of cobbledtogether backmarkers saved MotoGP.

MotoGP faced a severe problem in 2012. Suzuki had announced in 2011 that it wouldn’t continue after another poor season. Kawasaki had long since left the grid in 2008, and Aprilia KTM and any other manufacturer were uninterested in MotoGP. This meant that 2012 looked set to start with only 12 bikes—four apiece from Honda, Yamaha, and Ducati. This would have been a PR disaster, so something needed to be done quickly.

The answer came from the 'Claiming Rules Team' class, or CRT. It's a great story of desperation, cobbling together superbikes and using the rules to your advantage.
