Bad English was a prominent American rock supergroup that emerged in the late 1980s, bringing together the musicians musicians from two successful bands Journey and The Babys. Their brief time together gave the group a platinum record, but their second record became their undoing. Today because you guys requested it lets talk about the rise and fall of the band Bad English
Formation and Early Days
Bad English formation has it’s roots in the breakup of Journey. They had established themselves as one of the most successful rock groups of the late 70’s and 80’s with a string of huge multiplatinum records, but by the mid to late 80’s the band was done.Health and interpersonal issues led the band to taking a break. Guitarist Neil Schon told the morning call “Johnathan Cain, Steve Perry and I sat down on this dock one day to talk about our future. Jonathan and i wanted to go on with journey but steven didn’t know what he wanted to do. We were thinking about continuing journey with a new singer. I would just start completely fresh.”
Before I go any further I do want to make it known that among all the interviews I read from 1989 around the formation of bad english there seems to be varying accounts of exactly how the band formed based on who was interviewed. But the most common story involves keyboardist jonathan cain touring with michael bolton. Bolton was opening some shows for Heart in 1988. Cain expressed his desire to start a new band while talking backstage to Heart’s manager Trudy Green. Cain remarked to the village voice ‘i missed the edge and rock and roll profile’ Green suggested Cain call up his exwho suggested he call up his prejourney bandmates from the Babys including bassist Ricky Phillips.
The Babys were around from the mid 70’s until 1981 and were best known for the songs "Isn't It Time" and "Every Time I Think of You" with each peaking at number 13 on the hot 100 chart.
Phillips told Glide Magazine that he and Cain "got together and he told me Journey was going to split up, and he was about to announce this to the press and he wanted something ready. 'Do you want to do something? I want to do something like we had when we were in the Babys together.' And I said, 'Yeah, I’m in, let’s do it.' One report claimed the two bumped into each other at Cain’s brother’s wedding.
As for how the babys ended Cain told the los angeles daily news “the breakup was more due to communication problems within management and the record company structure than personal things within the band. The band was young and naive. Frontman John Waite wanted to go solo and that was the biggest reason. ”
The duo thought about who they wanted to front the group. Cain had run into his old baby’s frontman Waite in new york who was producing a record and they had dinner together. . After the baby’s fell apart, Waite pursued a solo career, nabbing a number 1 hit with the 1984 Missing You. But in the years since then his solo career was floundering as the record label he was on by 1988 had folded. At least that’s how it was reported. Again another discrepancy between interviews in the press.
Waite told the la times this was his last straw adding “I turned my back and faded off into the distance. I said that’s it. I can’t deal with this crap.”
Waite joined the duo and the the trio soon got together in san francisco to start writing some songs and Cain called up his journey bandmate, guitarist Neil Schon to help do some solos o nthe music. Schon wasn’t particularly interested in starting a new group after the implosion of journey. The trio had considered dozens of guitarists but had come up empty and while Schon wanted wanted to pursue a solo career, the music the trio were working on intrigued him enough to join the group. He soon placed a call to a session drummer he was working with at the time dean castronovo who funny enough would go on to play in journey a decade or so later."
The members of the Babys and Journey used to tour together and they even formed their own rat pack on the road Schon, Cain and Waite used to hit up clubs and do a few motown numbers on stage. The band nabbed a deal with epic record.s
