This video goes over why I think Elden Ring's Shadow of the Erdtree DLC is a masterpiece. Why I think Elden Ring succeeded and how it redefined what it means to create a DLC.

If you remember when Elden Ring first launched almost two years ago, the game was met with a ton of scrutiny. Not by players—players almost unanimously loved Elden Ring. It was under fire from other developers who lost their minds over how massive Elden Ring had become.

Maybe it's because while every developer wanted to capitalize on the hype that is openworld RPGs, they instead found a market that is completely disillusioned with their products.

Let's go even further back. When Elden Ring was released, almost every single new game coming out was open world. This, of course, was a result of games like GTA, Skyrim, Fallout, and The Witcher being by far the most popular singleplayer titles, and of course, developers wanted a piece of the action.

That unfortunately meant we got a flood of lowquality game worlds that ultimately felt forced into being open world. And that's largely due to the fact that these developers didn’t understand what they were doing. What made an openworld game like Skyrim amazing was the sense of wonder as you wander the map.

However, Elden Ring has no shortage of wonder.
