In a landmark decision the Supreme Court ruled that Haredim Jews, the ultraorthodox part of Israeli society, cannot be exempt from military service. They’ve been excused for nearly 80 years. But now the court says laws must be made fairer. The prospect of ultraorthodox Jews being conscripted into the army is stoking tensions both in society and the government coalition.
