During the IranIraq war, F5 played an extremely important role. It was used by Iran for various tasks, including CAS, interdiction and Combat Air Patrols. Iraq on the other hand operated various Soviet aircraft including MiG25. The type's high speed made it useful for tasks such as highaltitude bombing. MiG25s were also used in an attempt to interrupt airline traffic between Iran and Turkey. But, Iraqi MiG25s returning from such mission had to conserve fuel and that's when they became vulnerable. A lowly F5E whose top speed is about one half of the MiG's would get a chance to become a Foxbat killer.
