I visited AkzoNobel to learn more about how paint is made. Their MASSIVE site in Ashington, UK, is designed to be the most advanced, most sustainable paint factory IN THE WORLD, and it was a fantastic experience spending the day with them as they showed me how they make lots and lots AND LOTS of paint.

Have you seen my new book? It's available now https://www.maddiemoate.com/averycu...

Teaching resources for UK and US Curriculum

National Curriculum in England: Science Programmes of Study

Material Properties and Purposes (Key Stage 1 Year 1) 3.1 Distinguish between an object and the material from which it is made.

Material Properties and Purposes (Key Stage 1 Year 1) 3.3 Describe the simple physical properties of a variety of everyday materials

What Is Science? (35 Version) (Aims Key Stages 14) 3 Are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

What is Engineering? (Key Stage 2 Years 34) WS.7 Using results to draw simple conclusions, make predictions for new values, suggest improvements, and raise further questions.

Simple Machines (Key Stage 2 Year 5) 5.3 Recognise that some mechanisms, including levers, pulleys, and gears, allow a smaller force to have a greater effect

US Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)

Structure and Properties of Matter

2PS11. Plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties

2PS12. Analyze data obtained from testing different materials to determine which materials have the properties that are best suited for an intended purpose

Engineering Design

K2ETS11. Ask questions, make observations, and gather information about a situation people want to change to define a simple problem that can be solved through the development of a new or improved object or tool.

Energy

4PS32. Make observations to provide evidence that energy can be transferred from place to place by sound, light, heat, and electric currents.

4ESS31. Obtain and combine information to describe that energy and fuels are derived from natural resources and that their uses affect the environment.

5PS14. Conduct an investigation to determine whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances.

35ETS11. Define a simple design problem reflecting a need or a want that includes specified criteria for success and constraints on materials, time, or cost.

Literacy

RI.4.3 Explain events, procedures, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text, including what happened and why, based on specific information in the text

RI.3.3 Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect.

W.1.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., explore a number of “howto” books on a given topic and use them to write a sequence of instructions)
