The cochlear implant that is implanted into the body of the patient is supposed to last a lifetime. Having said that it is an electronic device and at some times the implant has to be removed or explanted if there is any infection or any malfunction in the electronics due to some other reason. Invariably this does not happen but in extraneous circumstances it may have to be removed and if necessary a new implant to be put.
