Sponsorship appeals, permanent residency appeals and appeals for a removal order involving Canadian citizens or permanent residents are filed in the Appeal Division of the Immigration Department. After filing, a record of the appeal is submitted to the staff at the Division for a review to determine if there can be an early resolution. The case can be resolved through written submissions or the alternative dispute resolution process. If the case is not resolved in any of the two methods above, the appeal will be forwarded for hearing before a judge. This may take a longer time to obtain a decision.
