How Many RGB LED Strip per Power Supply?

Calculating the current draw on LED strips is essential to determine what kind of power supply you will need. All of our power supplies here at SIRSE have a datasheet with that specification written out.

In this video we will show you a simple way to determine what power supply will work best for your project.

We will be using a 400 watt power supply and a dual density RGB LED Strip. First off, you must divide the 400 watts of the 400W power supply by the 48 watts of the strip. This will give you an answer of around 8.

This means that 8 strips equals to about 400 watts. A power supply should never be run at full capacity due to thermal issues that can arise, and to protect the longevity of the power supply.

The rule of thumb for calculating power supply capacity is to multiply the capacity of a power supply by .75 and that will give you the maximum watts you can draw safely from that power supply. 300 watts is the most you can safely draw from a 400 watt power supply.

You can divide 300 by 48 and you will get roughly 6. 6 dual density strips is the most you can put on a 400w power supply safely. This same rule applies to any other size power supply with any other type of strip.
