How PN Junction works in Solar Cells N type P type Semiconductors | Depletion region with Biasing

A pn junction is a fundamental semiconductor device that forms the basis of various electronic components, including diodes, transistors, and solar cells. At its core, a pn junction consists of two adjacent semiconductor regions: one doped with acceptor impurities to create a surplus of positive charge carriers (holes), known as the ptype region, and the other doped with donor impurities to create an excess of negative charge carriers (electrons), known as the ntype region.

When these two regions are brought into contact, a diffusion of charge carriers occurs due to the concentration gradient between them. Electrons from the ntype region diffuse into the ptype region, and holes from the ptype region diffuse into the ntype region. This diffusion process results in the formation of a region near the junction called the depletion zone, where the majority charge carriers have been depleted, leaving behind immobile ions.
