How Prosthetic Limbs Are Controlled By Thoughts | Targeted Muscle Reinnervation

Curious Doc

Targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR) is an exciting new method that allows amputees to gain control of prosthetic limbs with just their thoughts ! Basically it involves redirecting residual nerves that would otherwise have no purpose to existing target muscles. This way, when the patient activates the nerves for their amputated limb, it causes a contraction of the target muscle . Electrodes on the skin can then pick up the contraction and relay that signal to motors in the prosthetic limb . This way the patient can control multiple joints at the same time with less rehab than traditional myoelectric prosthetic devices. It's truly scifi... One day the hope is that these prosthetic limbs will surpass native limbs in power and dexterity.

There's also another huge topic called targeted sensory reinnervation which uses similar principles of TMR but to redirect sensory nerves to restore senation to the missing limb. It has interesting origins and was discovered by accident! It's not something I had space to fit in this video so look forward to a future video where I explore this
