The E3 Sentry is a modified Boeing 707/320 commercial airframe with a rotating radar dome. AWACS is equipped with an integrated command and control battle management, or C2BM, surveillance, target detection, and tracking platform. The aircraft provides the Joint Air Operations Center with an accurate, realtime picture of the battlespace. Over the next four decades, the E3 has played a vital role in almost every military conflict due to the aircraft being flown by both the US Air Force and NATO Alliance Forces. As Ukraine reclaims land in its conflict with the invading Russians, it is evident that western information, notably the comprehensive image provided by the AWACS, has been a crucial factor in their victory. The Air Force in April 2022 chose the Boeingmade Wedgetail to be its next battle management and command and control aircraft, replacing part of its aging E3 Airborne Warning and Control fleet.
