The operating room (OR) is a vital hub within the healthcare system, and perioperative nurses play a critical role in this symphony, ensuring patient safety and optimal outcomes throughout the surgical journey. However, the demand for these specialized nurses is outpacing the current supply.
So, how do we cultivate the next generation of perioperative nurses and secure a robust pipeline for the future? Here are four key strategies:

1. Targeted Exposure to Perioperative Nursing:

o Partner with nursing schools to integrate perioperative experiences into curriculums. This could involve guest lectures from OR nurses, clinical rotations in surgical settings, or even virtual reality simulations of the OR environment.

o Organize career fairs or information sessions specifically focused on perioperative nursing. Highlight the unique aspects of the specialty, like the fastpaced environment, teamwork, and advanced skills involved.

2. Mentorship and Networking Programs:

o Connect student nurses with experienced perioperative nurses for mentorship. Mentors can provide guidance, answer questions, and share their career experiences.

o Facilitate networking opportunities between students and perioperative nurses at local AORN meetings, professional conferences or through online platforms.

o Continuously educate new and returning nurses with Periop 101. It covers core areas like aseptic technique, patient safety, communication, sterilization and disinfection, and surgical case management. Offered online, in a hybrid format, or for a facility.

3. Financial Support and Scholarships:

o Offer scholarships or loan forgiveness programs specifically for students interested in pursuing perioperative nursing careers. This can help alleviate financial burdens and make the specialty more accessible.

o Advocate for higher wages and competitive benefits for perioperative nurses. This will not only retain current nurses but also make the specialty more attractive to potential candidates.

4. Highlighting Growth and Career Advancement:

o Showcase the diverse career paths available within perioperative nursing, including specializing in specific surgical areas, becoming educators, or moving into leadership roles.

o Emphasize opportunities for professional development and continuing education within the field. This demonstrates the potential for lifelong learning and career growth in perioperative nursing.

By implementing these strategies, healthcare institutions and nursing organizations can cultivate a stronger interest in perioperative nursing and ensure a steady pipeline of qualified nurses for the future.
