How to Become a Notary in Illinois

Before applying for an Illinois Notary Public commission, make sure you are at least 18 years old, are a U.S. citizen or legal resident, live or work in Illinois for a minimum of 30 days prior to applying, and are able to read and write in English. In addition, you should not have any felony convictions nor have a previous Notary commission revoked.

Below are the steps to becoming an Illinois Notary:
1. Read the Illinois Notary Public Handbook and Illinois Notary Laws.
2. Take a Notary training class and pass an exam (requirement starts on 1/1/24).
3. Fill out the top portion of the application to become an Illinois Notary.
4. Take your oath of office and get your application notarized.
5. Buy a $5,000* surety bond.
6. Photocopy the front and back of your driver's license or state ID card.
7. Submit your application with a copy of your ID and the $15 application fee.
8. Receive your commission from the state.
9. Buy your Notary seal, journal and other supplies.
*If you answered ‘yes’ to the audiovisual question, you’ll need to get a $30,000 bond.
