Notaries are responsible for verifying a person’s identity, confirming they are
aware of what they plan to sign, and that they are not being pressured to sign
a document.

Washington Notary applicants must be 18 or older, live or have a place of
business in the state, be a citizen or legal resident of the U.S.*, and be able to
read and write English. If you meet the necessary requirements, you are ready to get started.

*Starting on July 1, 2024, Washington state will no longer require applicants to be citizens or legal residents of the U.S. to qualify for a commission.

Here are the important steps it takes to become a Notary Public in WA:
1. Get a $10,000 surety bond.
2. Complete the Notary application and oath.
3. Submit your application, a copy of your surety bond and a $40 application
fee to the Washington State Department of Licensing online or by mail.
4. Receive your Notary certificate.
5. Buy your official Washington Notary stamp and journal.
