To become a real estate appraiser in California, a candidate must complete the trainee requirement, take the prelicensing education, accumulate work hours, pass the associated appraiser exam, and submit an application to the Bureau of Real Estate Appraisers (BREA).

California has 4 distinct real estate appraiser licenses, they are the:

Residential Appraiser (AL)
Certified Residential Appraiser (AR)
Certified General Appraiser (AG)
