Simple speaker panel build for our 1963 LSswapped Buick Riviera project.

Welcome to (does stuff garage) Today’s project we are building a DIY rear speaker/package shelf. Starting off by creating a cardboard template with length and width you need and then using the secret Uncle Matt Dad trick of using the back class curve to get you rear edge you've now got yourself a pattern.

I used some cheap (crappy) plywood from our shed for the lower panel, but for the top piece that surrounds the speakers I used half inch thick MDF. I did this because MDF is very conisistent and provided great curves and edges after routing. Remember you can always use wood filler (bondo if you made a big mistake) and a belt sander here to fix the mistakes. I wanted to use materials from scratch to show that you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a nice looking part if you're ok with a little extra elbow grease.

I use Morbern AllSport 4Way stretch vinyls for almost every project for car interiors. I make custom consoles in my free time and its the only vinyl I've ever found that can do the complex curves and angles like a champ. While its a little pricey remember the yards are actually 54" wide. I'm using the standard black but they also have a hightac version that is great from anything that gets wet on a boat and you don't want things to slide around.

For upholstery adhesive I don't recommend any glue besides DAP Weldwood Landua Top and Trim Adhesive Nothing else comes close to this stuff and it's well worth it. So much better than 3M High Performance spray adhesive. If you don't wanna buy it by the gallon call up your local upholstery shop and they will usually sell you a quart or two if you bring in a container.

For speakers I went with the cheapest on Amazon that didn't have grills that looked like they were from Cyperpunk 2077. They are Pioneer TSF1634R 6.5" 200W 2way speakers. I prefer the look of 6.5 inch speakers in a rear deck panel with the speakers exposed. If you conceal the speakers under a panel and cover it with grill cloth I prefer to use 6x9's but the choice is up to you!
