This engineering statics tutorial introduces how to calculate normal force on a slope. Normal force is going to appear in lots of statics problems, and higher level structural engineering problems. It’s good to take some time to get really comfortable with drawing the triangle that has weight as its hypotenuse, and y’ and x’ as the adjacent and opposite sides. Taking the time to realize that this is a right angle triangle, and the angle in the top part will equal the angle of the ramp’s slope will allow us to understand which is the opposite and which is the adjacent side, and then we can know which side to use sin and cos functions on. Notice that the opposite and adjacent sides are the x’ and y’ components of the weight vector.
