How to Check Your Child for Scoliosis: Adams Forward Bending Test

Follow
Scoliosis SOS Clinic

Worried that your child may have scoliosis? The Adams Forward Bending Test is a simple way to check for a curved spine.

In this video, the Scoliosis SOS team with the help of our patients Iulia, Daniel and Sara demonstrate how to check your child for scoliosis.

1. First, ask your child to remove their top and stand facing away from you so you can see their back clearly.

2. While your child is standing upright, visually inspect their back. Do you notice any significant asymmetry or unevenness in their shoulders, ribs, neck, waist or hips?

3. Next, ask your child to bend forward at the waist, as if they were trying to touch their toes.

4. Does one side of their rib cage sit noticeably higher than the other?

No body is perfectly symmetrical, but if you answered YES to question 2 or 4, it's possible that your child has scoliosis.

Please note that the Adams Forward Bending Test is merely an informal scoliosis test for parents to use at home without any medical equipment. If you think your child may have scoliosis, it's important to visit your doctor in order to get a professional medical diagnosis.
