Bluing of steel is done to help prevent rusting of the steel. Hot bluing, in my experience is best, but it's somewhat complicated and can be a bit expensive to have done. One alternative is to cold blue your rifle barrel and in recent years these products have been vastly improved. In this video we reblue a rifle barrel and some very good results.
