How to COMPOST in a FLOWERPOT

Follow
Mills Family Gardening

Making your own compost is easy, and the results are fun to watch. We started a new batch in late March using some kitchen scraps, dead leaves, and old compost. We added some llama manure to enrich the final product, and then took a look at the results in late May. The smaller ingredients broke down into soil completely, with some leaves and other items not broken down completely.

To succeed in composting in a flowerpot, make sure there's a drain in the bottom so it won't retain water. But be sure to keep it moist, which will help the bacteria thrive. Add your ingredients in layers, with dead leaves at the bottom and top, and at least one layer of old compost in the middle to help decompose the newer materials. We've also learned that meats and dairy attract critters, so we quit putting those in our compost. Putting a lid or rock on top of the flowerpot will also help keep critters away.
