How to Crochet a Sunflower Granny Square Blanket 🌻

Follow
Meema Makes

This tutorial shows how to crochet a blanket using sunflower granny squares. This tutorial covers the making of the granny squares, joining the squares, and adding a border. It is for beginner and experienced crocheters who want a simple blanket pattern. The pattern is called the Sunflower Squish Rug and Blanket and can be made in any yarn or hook size, however I recommend using Yarnsmiths Snug as a Bug yarn with a 7 or 8mm hook.

BLANKET SIZES
The blanket can be made to any size but these are the standard sizes as given in the written pattern using the recommended yarn:
Rug (24 squares): 89cm x 129.5cm / 35” x 51” [Requires 1 yarn pack]
Throw (25 squares): 109cm x 109cm / 43” x 43” [Requires 1 yarn pack]
Blanket (48 squares): 129.5cm x 170cm / 51” x 67” [Requires 2 yarn packs]

The above measurements are only correct if you get the correct gauge. Your squares should be 21cm or 8 1/4 inches across one side. If your squares are not this size your meterage and finished blanket will be a different size.

YARN REQUIREMENTS
Get the yarn pack here: https://www.woolwarehouse.co.uk/meema...
The blanket is made from Yarnsmiths Snug as a Bug, which is a super chunky chenille yarn with a meterage of 150m in 300g. You will need the following colours for each of the 3 sizes above Rug (Throw, Blanket):
1 (1, 2) balls of Teddy 2A060
2 (2, 4) balls of Sunshine 2A230
3 (3, 6) balls of Porcelain 2A100

In the tutorial I also show some squares made in an alternative yarn in a lighter weight. The yarn I used is Stylecraft Special Aran in Gold and White, and Hayfield Bonus Aran in Fawn. I used a 5.5mm hook for those squares.

OTHER MATERIALS
You will need a 7mm hook (or whatever size to meet gauge), as well as scissors and a large blunt yarn needle.

CROCHET ALONG DETAILS
The full tutorial and written pattern were released on 17th February 2024 and the CAL will run until 29th March. There will be weekly posts at 6pm GMT every Saturday on Youtube Community Tab, Instagram, and inside the Meema Makes Crochet Community Facebook Group detailing what to crochet each week so you will finish the blanket within 6 weeks! Crocheting together is fun and we can help each other out along the way. You can share your progress using the hashtag #SunflowerSquishCAL on social media.
