The sciatic nerve starts in the lower spine and extends down into your leg and foot. It is a mixed nerve which means it contains both nerve and motor fibers. Sciatica is not a condition but refers to symptoms that can occur when the sciatic nerve is affected in a negative way.

The sciatic nerve can be exposed to uneven pressure any way along its pathway. This uneven pressure can cause it to become pinched, inflamed, or irritated. The most common place this occurs is right at the nerve root, where it exits the lumbar spine. When this nerve is exposed to uneven forces, it has less space to function therefore altering the way the nerve senses information or sends information out.

Symptoms associated with sciatica are vast. Since it is a mixed nerve, you can have localized low back pain, radicular pain down into the hips and legs, and burning and tingling sensation in the lower part of the body. Pain intensifies during long periods of sitting and standing. Muscle weakness and atrophy, numbness, and shooting pain ranging from mild to severe.

The most common cause of sciatica is when something is affecting the lower spine. It can be disc degeneration, lumbar spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, and any type of condition that introduces uneven pressure and misalignment to the spine,

The most common sciatica treatment is pain management, even though the treatment plan should be customized to the patient’s condition. A conservative approach looking at causation tries to reposition the affected vertebra back into its proper alignment. This can be done with chiropractic treatment, adjustments, and exercises to reduce the uneven forces allowing the spine to function properly and give room for the nerves. When disc degeneration is involved, it can help the spine stop degrading, but you can also use spinal rehabilitation and therapy to improve disc health and allow the disc to repair properly. The goal is to address on a structural level what is causing the sciatic pain by its root.
