This video explains how to customize the assignable buttons and use them while playing music. This video demonstrates the process on Yamaha PSR SX 700 but it may be useful on some other models as well like SX 900 & SX 600. There are total 7 assignable buttons on this keyboard, 6 buttons are located below the screen and the 7th button is above the pitch bend wheel.

Assignable buttons let you change a particular setting quickly by hitting just one button, which turns out to be very useful while playing music.
