In this tutorial, we'll learn how to design a spring in SOLIDWORKS using grounded square ends.

This spring tutorial is perfect for anyone who wants to learn how to design a spring in SOLIDWORKS. We'll start by creating our base model in SOLIDWORKS and then we'll add the springs to our model. We'll also learn how to create a mirrored version of our spring and use cornercutting techniques to save time in our design. By the end of this tutorial, you'll be able to design a spring in SOLIDWORKS using grounded square ends.

A spring is defined as an elastic body, whose function is to distort when loaded and to recover its original shape when the load is removed. The various important applications of springs are as follows :
1. To cushion, absorb or control energy due to either shock or vibration as in car springs, railway buffers, aircraft landing gears, shock absorbers and vibration dampers.
2. To apply forces, as in brakes, clutches and springloaded valves.
3. To control motion by maintaining contact between two elements as in cams and followers.
4. To measure forces, as in spring balances and engine indicators. 5. To store energy, as in watches, toys, etc.

Example 23.6. Design a close coiled helical compression spring for a service load ranging from 2250 N to 2750 N. The axial deflection of the spring for the load range is 6 mm. Assume a spring index of 5. The permissible shear stress intensity is 420 MPa and modulus of rigidity, G = 84 kN/mm2. Neglect the effect of stress concentration. Draw a fully dimensioned sketch of the spring, showing details of the finish of the end coils.
